Instructions

  1. Select a manageable load on the horizontal leg-press machine. Adjust the seat so your back is supported and you can keep tension through a comfortable ankle range.

  2. Place the ball of one foot securely on the lower edge of the platform, with the heel free to move. Keep the other foot clear of the platform and moving parts.

  3. Hold the handles and press into the starting position. Keep the working knee nearly straight with a soft bend; maintain this knee position throughout each repetition.

  4. Push through the ball of the working foot to point your toes away from you and move the resistance. Let the motion come from your ankle, keeping your knee and hip still.

  5. Pause briefly, then return slowly by letting your heel move back toward you. Use a comfortable calf stretch without bouncing or letting your foot slip.

  6. Complete the repetitions, return the machine safely to its resting position, then repeat with the other leg.

  7. Keep your back against the pad and avoid snapping your knee into hyperextension. Reduce the load or range if you lose control or feel knee or ankle pain.
